Explain Meditation

What is Meditation? How it is different from concentration? Is it the same process or different?

These might be the quickest doubts you have in mind when you are asked about meditation.

Find some quick facts on .

Different meaning has been given to meditation by different people. One will get easily confused with the words concentration and meditation.

Lets dwell into what is meditation.

Meditation is awareness, means being total in what you do and what you think. It is not a skill, it is a gift, it is a knack.

The first thing to understand is that meditation is totally different from concentration. Obviously doubt arise in one's mind – then what is concentration? In concentration an object would be there to being concentrated upon. A duality is happening there in concentration. But in meditation you need not to focus in on any thing, there is no one inside and outside. It is different from concentration.

what is meditation?

Due to the dual consciousness concentration makes us tiredness. Hence you feel exhausted when you concentrate for long. Its not possible to concentrate for 24 hours.

Meditation does not make you tire and does not make you feel exhausted. Its a 24 hour process, it is eternal. It is relaxation itself.

Its a self awareness process in each step of your life - aware of what you are doing. While eating aware that you are eating, while talking aware that you are talking, while reading aware that you are reading- be aware of what you do. Dont try to ignore the thoughts or restrict your thoughts let it come to your mind, aware of the thoughts that rushes to your mind. Accept it, aware it.
Suddenly you feel a sense of realization and bliss - an enlightenment.

An effort is needed in concentration. You are doing some thing in concentration. But meditation is a state of inaction and no will. There is no conclusion come out of meditation. You are not doing any thing in particular. You just remain as yourself no past is attached to it. You are not taking effort to focus on any object to meditate. This is what zen masters have been saying : sitting silently doing nothing. You are letting your life to go on its own way, when you are not imposing any rules on life, when you are not manipulating and not imposing any rules on it – an undisciplined spontaneity is what meditation is.

Meditation is happening in the present. You can be in meditation but you cannot meditate. Mediation is effortless but concentration is attempt.
